Brown Turkey

The Brown Turkey is one of the most common fig types you will find in Australia. Most nurseries stocking fruit trees and stores like Bunnings will have a fig tree or two, and most likely it will be either Brown Turkey, Black Genoa, White Genoa or Yellow Excell.

I originally purchased my Brown Turkey from Daley's online nursery, which stocks a number of fig trees. The sent the tree to me mid season, whilst it was in full leaf.

When I bought my Brown Turkey it was mid February and those in Canberra may remember we had quite a hot Summer and Autumn.

This hot season really punished all my containerised fruit trees, and almost all my plants sat there in suspended animation until the weather cooled down well into Autumn.

This is the same plant a month later in March.

And then again in April.

After the weather cooled down, it began to put on a small amount new growth for the first time since I purchased it. These 1 or 2 two new leaves dropped shortly afterwards with the first frost.

In Spring the Brown Turkey broke dormancy about two weeks after the earliest fig, and has since flushed with new growth. It appears to have put on all the leaves it had last year, and perhaps one or two more.

I also have a Brown Turkey planted in the ground, and although it appears to originate from the same nursery as their labels are the same.

The leaf shape of each plant is totally different however, and this makes me question whether or not they are indeed both the same variety.

Same Labels...

But totally different leaf shape!
